[ bcr19374 joined the game ] [bcr19374]: hey there [Volt9]: hey! [bcr19374]: did you see my game? [Volt9]: Yes, but I couldn't join it [bcr19374]: hmm [bcr19374]: that's odd [Volt9]: I tried about 6 times and got a 'connect failed' notice [bcr19374]: well, I haven't hostd before... Maybe I have it set up wrong. [Volt9]: could be...I'm just playing around with this myself [bcr19374]: how long have you been here? [Volt9]: about 5 minutes hosting [bcr19374]: ok, I'm glad you weren't waiting a long time [bcr19374]: Did you try out the tutorial? [Volt9]: are the others coming? nobody else responded to your email [bcr19374]: Yeah, I don't know if anyone is coming. I didn't get any responces either. [Volt9]: no, not yet...I was looking at the character sheets to see how much we could use for fallout [bcr19374]: I didn't plan on using the character sheets within this program [bcr19374]: if you want to make on for yourself, though, that's fine [bcr19374]: I have printed out the pdf character sheets and am writing all of the character's information on them to have handy for the game. [Volt9]: yeah, just a quick glance showed a lot of the information is too different...maybe for health and ammo but thats it [bcr19374]: I think I'm also going to make 3x5 cards to use for the sequence in battle. [bcr19374]: You can probably design your own char sheet but I haven't looked into it. [Volt9]: good idea...have you tried out the combat yet? [bcr19374]: Well, I tried a trial run of a combat I had planned for the game using your character and one other. It seemed like it might be a little time consuming [bcr19374]: have you looked at the map? [Volt9]: the map? [ Zephyr joined the game ] [bcr19374]: in this program, I mean [bcr19374]: hey [Volt9]: hello...who goes there? [Zephyr]: Uhhh, me [bcr19374]: click on the blue icon on the top left and choose "half + half" [bcr19374]: Are you part of the group or did you jsut stop by randomly? [Volt9]: ahh...ok now I see a grid [Zephyr]: saw the word Fallout, like computer game, wanted to see if had anything to do with it. [bcr19374]: yeah, we're planning on doing a Fallout RPG here [Volt9]: hi Zephyr...this is for fallout but for now we'ree just getting used to the software...games not running yet [bcr19374]: Volt9: do you see something on the map now? [Zephyr]: cooool. [Volt9]: trenchcoat wiseguy [bcr19374]: cool, it works [Zephyr]: Fallout rules [Volt9]: hey, he's moving :) [bcr19374]: yeah, you move by drag and drop [Volt9]: cool, so we can share resources.....maps, documents, etc. [bcr19374]: Zephyr: Check out http://RuthefordBarnes.tripod.com/fallout/ for more info on the campaign [Zephyr]: ok. [bcr19374]: Yeah, I was hoping to do the combat using the map [ Zephyr left the game ] [bcr19374]: Its not a hex map but that shouln't cause problems. The only difference will be in range. [Volt9]: ah...so we would have icons and we could see relative to where the opponents are and such? [bcr19374]: right [Volt9]: very slick [bcr19374]: Uh oh, a spider attacks! [Volt9]: that will help me...I have a hard time conceptualizing stuff like that [Volt9]: I still see garet [bcr19374]: hmm [bcr19374]: see it now? [Volt9]: there we go [bcr19374]: um... hit the toobar button on the bottom of the map [bcr19374]: the different pawns control the zoom level of the map [Volt9]: gotcha [bcr19374]: if you zoom out you can see further [Volt9]: cool, I see [bcr19374]: um, try creating an icon. [bcr19374]: go to the webrpg toolbox on the left and hit the plus there [bcr19374]: then opne the minatures folder [Volt9]: ok [bcr19374]: open the creatures folder [bcr19374]: and double click on humanoid [bcr19374]: cool [bcr19374]: Now you can move it by drag and drop [Volt9]: hehe [bcr19374]: where it says snap on the toolbar make sure there are two check marks [Volt9]: ok [bcr19374]: that will make them center in the squares when you move [Volt9]: ah crap [bcr19374]: heh heh [bcr19374]: the dragon breathes [Volt9]: /me died [bcr19374]: spider is burnt to a crisp [Volt9]: hey what about emotes and whatnot [Volt9]: or whispers [bcr19374]: try typing /he whatever Volt9 testing 1 2 3 bcr19374 is doing well [Volt9]: /bcr19374 testing 1 2 3 [Volt9]: doh [Volt9]: how do you whisper to someone? [bcr19374]: hit esc (Volt9 whispered to bcr19374): test [Volt9]: ah cool (bcr19374 whispered to Volt9): wokring [Volt9]: aye [Volt9]: well the software seems pretty good. [Volt9]: test [Volt9]: test [Volt9]: ok [Volt9]: green [Volt9]: green [Volt9]: cool [Volt9]: so about the campaign...lesse, the nuclear war happened in 2077? [Volt9]: I played the origional fallout years ago and since have been playing fallout 2 cause I actually own that one. So my timeline is going to be a little off for this campaign setting [Overseer]: my cd player just died [Volt9]: doh [Overseer]: its a 6 dics and it won't actually load any dics... it just cycles through them endlessly [Grampy bone]: test [Overseer]: anyways, about the campagin... [Overseer]: heh [Grampy bone]: we and I listening [Overseer]: I am setting it right after the end of the first game. [Volt9]: ok...so when did the war happen? [Overseer]: um. [Overseer]: I dunno [Overseer]: I'm not big on dates [Volt9]: I thought it was 2077 but Im not positive [Volt9]: thats what the intro says...when they guy starts the 'war...war never changes' spiel [Overseer]: that could be it. Apparently Vault 15 was finished in 2069 [Overseer]: ok [Volt9]: sounds right [Volt9]: what year are we playing in? [Overseer]: Well, the year isn't going to be too important to the game play, unless you're an astrologist or something [Overseer]: it will be the year at the end of Fallout 1. I'll have to find that out. [Volt9]: ok...I'm just trying to get my head around the setting, what I would know...I mean are ghouls and supermutants and deathclaws commen knowledge? [Overseer]: No, not where you live. [Volt9]: the ranch is kind of isolated, right? most news would come from the caravan guys from brownstone I take it... [Overseer]: right. [Volt9]: where is the ranch relative to the world map? Like is it near a city I'd recognize from the game? [Overseer]: oh, btw I got two emails today from people who want to play, so assuming everyone who has expressed an interest actually plays, we will have plenty of people [Volt9]: ah cool, who else? [Overseer]: Two guys from outside the GG forum, I think. I wasn;t getting enough responces there so I advertised elsewhere [Volt9]: right on [Volt9]: so nappy couldn't committ? [Overseer]: its pretty far to the East of Fallout's setting. Probably in the mid west somewhere [Overseer]: He hasn't said positively either way, yet. [Volt9]: hmm..the map in the game is weird...is vault city in California? I think it was [Overseer]: This week I'm going to write up a bunch of background info for the campaing [Overseer]: yeah, in california [Volt9]: cool...so was the pnp made by one of the game designers or was it a fan project? [Overseer]: fan project [Overseer]: you've probably noticed its a bit rough around the edges [Overseer]: that's why I had to write so many custom rules [Volt9]: yeah, I look at us as beta testers [Overseer]: hey, can you move the dragon and other peices I created? [Volt9]: yup [Volt9]: I probably can because I'm hosting and have gm status or whatever [Volt9]: hmm...there's plugins for other games. Maybe fallout will show up eventually [Overseer]: oh, well I can move yours so it seems like it shouldn't be a problem [Overseer]: its only a couple of weeks old now... not too many people know about it [Volt9]: yeah [Overseer]: do you want to try a simple combat and see how it works? [Volt9]: sure [Overseer]: oh, I want to try something else as wel... [Volt9]: argh...I dont have the stats for my weapon, will take me a sec to find it [Overseer]: tell me if you see this [Volt9]: wolf [Overseer]: I have all your stats [Overseer]: cool [Volt9]: oh ok [Overseer]: did you download the minature addon? [Overseer]: because this is from that [Volt9]: nope...just the software and java runtime stuff [Overseer]: cool, then everyone won't have to download it. [Volt9]: I wonder if its possible to custom design images and import them [Volt9]: outnumbered...this is looking grim, folks [Overseer]: It probably is. If you want to make a custom icon for your character that would be cool. [Overseer]: oops one wolf died of an ulcer right now... [Volt9]: is there anything I should be looking at reference wise now, or do you have the necessary informatioin? [Volt9]: lol [Overseer]: if you want you can follow along in the combat section of the manual. [Volt9]: ok, getting docs [Overseer]: but I think I'll talk out all the steps so we both get a good grasp of it. [Overseer]: oh, btw, because of the square grid, range is max(x distance, y distance) [Volt9]: how do target shots work...do we just declare intent for one "aiming for it's eyes"? [Overseer]: so both wolves are now at a distance of six squares from you [Volt9]: okey doke [Overseer]: yeah, targetting works just like that [Overseer]: there may be times when I say you can't target a certina portion because its covers [Volt9]: um...I have 7 aps so... [Volt9]: have to see aps for the .357, hold on 1 sec [Overseer]: 4 normal, 4 target [Volt9]: is that a rock? [Overseer]: yeah [Volt9]: 1 hex movement is 1 ap? [Overseer]: all the terrain I just put down is impassible [Overseer]: right [Volt9]: ok [Overseer]: you are first in the round [Volt9]: so should I assume the wolf in front of me is behind cover? [Overseer]: yes [Volt9]: ok. [Overseer]: the one to the right is [Overseer]: you can see the other [Volt9]: whats the range for my gun? [Overseer]: 19 [Overseer]: both are well within range [Volt9]: ok [Volt9]: Im firing at the one diagonal to me, that I have clear line of sight to [Overseer]: I might end up halving the ranges of the weapons just because the map gets small awfully quick. [Overseer]: ok [Volt9]: d100? [Volt9]: that lowers damage though, right? [Overseer]: well, he took high agility, unfortunately the single most important stat in the game because it decides APs. [Overseer]: yeah, lowers damage by 30% [Overseer]: but allows more cripplings and damage bonuses through crits [Volt9]: yeah, agi is extremely important...my initial char had 8...but then I read on your site about there being less combat [Overseer]: with a targeted shot he'll have a 46% crit chance [Volt9]: so seven should be decent [Volt9]: damn [Overseer]: yes, I am going to try to keep combat down so the other stats will be important [Volt9]: I'm still on the fence about the specialization...I could make a good sniper if I chose that, but all I can afford at this point is a handgun [Overseer]: I'm trying to put bonuses into the adventures for people with high stats of all kinds. An intelligent person will notice something in convo that another won't, a perceptive one will find things lying under rocks, a charismatic person will find it really easy to get their way [Volt9]: is experience going to be mostly determined from combat? [Overseer]: well, I wanted to start everyone off small. [Overseer]: no, not at all [Overseer]: combat xp will probably be a 1/3 or less [Overseer]: of the total, I mean [Volt9]: right [Overseer]: solving problems will be the most important thing, and I like to reward good roleplaying, like doing something dangerous because your character would even though the player knows its a bad idea [Volt9]: another one that is tempting is gifted..in the computer game I usually choose it [Overseer]: yeah, khomotso took that also [Volt9]: err...or whatever the one is that boosts all stats by one but lowers percentages [Overseer]: you've got the right one [Volt9]: I primarily made this char for the roleplaying aspects...he's an anti-hero [Overseer]: hopefully we'll get at least one guy who is not... [Volt9]: will probably get in a lot of fight due to his poor impulse control [Overseer]: one of the guys who emailed me today said that he likes to have his characters manipulate others into doing his bidding. [Volt9]: heh [Volt9]: say, what happens if we die? [Overseer]: um, you're dead [Volt9]: so spectator mode, no secondary chars? [Overseer]: maybe later on there will be cloning or something. I plan on doing some sort of death's door rule, though. need to put that in the house rules [Volt9]: heh...I think death will come in abundance [Overseer]: things would be too crowded with secondary chars. We'll see how it comes out. I'm going to try to make combat be more story based than lethal [Volt9]: sounds good [Overseer]: most of the time when someone dies it will be an npc and that event will be scripted beforehand anyway [Overseer]: however, if you do something stupid you may die. Like trash talking a guy with power armor and a chain gun [Volt9]: hehe [Volt9]: I'll try and restrain myself [Overseer]: beware the orange triangle [Volt9]: though it will be hard not aping how he walks behind him like a mime [Overseer]: hm? [Volt9]: eghh...danger will robinson... [Overseer]: that's kind of creey. [Volt9]: my radiation resistance isn't very high Volt9 glows [Overseer]: I wouldn't want a triangle following me around like that [Volt9]: yeah, it's making me paranoid [Overseer]: its too bad no one else showed up. I think this session has been pretty useful [Volt9]: I know, strange no one else responded [Volt9]: I think webrpg is pretty nice as far as the interface and all. [Overseer]: maybe they're all off partying for the weekend... its the last one before school starts here [Volt9]: can you make maps beforhand and just drop our character into it? [Overseer]: yeah, I like it. we don't use the map in the Cthulhu game, but it seems like it will work well for Fallout [Overseer]: I think you can. I haven't tried yet. [Overseer]: I'd like to do that for a few encounters I have planned. [Volt9]: I was reading one of the logs joel was using and he just showed the map in the shared documents, right? [Overseer]: yes, he did that once. but not since. the way he runs things it would be too much work [Volt9]: It's a shame I didn't respond to his game earlier, I love lovecraftian stuff [Overseer]: yeah its been quite a bit of fun [Overseer]: have you heard of Charles Fort? [Volt9]: although in the fallout universe you never know what you're going to find :) [Volt9]: charles fort? doesn't ring a bell [Overseer]: ever seen the Fortean Times magazine? [Volt9]: squid+radiation=cthulhu [Volt9]: yes, I've seen it [Overseer]: it gets its name from Charles Fort [Overseer]: he was an investigator of the weird in the early 20th [Volt9]: ah [Overseer]: he showed up in Joel's adventure yesterday [Volt9]: cool [Overseer]: it was very cool. Joel suggested that my character and his have a rivalry so we had a nice name calling session [Volt9]: you know Sandy Peterson the creator of the game worked at ID software on doom and quake [Volt9]: what character were you in the game? [Overseer]: no, I hadn't heard that. Seems like a waste [Volt9]: thats why quake had Cthon and Shub-Niggurath in it I suppose [Overseer]: my cahracter is called Roland Windemeer. He's an egyptologist who also investigates the occult [Volt9]: you joined in later, right? [Overseer]: yeah, this is only my second week [Volt9]: I read some of the earlier logs but haven't been up to the trans-atlantic voyage yet [Overseer]: last weeks was really good. This weeks was basically just typing up loose ends but it was fun too [Overseer]: its probably worth reading. I think these adventures would make a good book [Volt9]: is this a long campaign or are you about half-way through? [Overseer]: Joel's? I don't really know. He hasn't said. I know we've got at least three to more more sessions, though, since he mentioned stuff that far. [Volt9]: yeah, I'll read them next week at work. I have lots of free time, but I just forgot to check back for the updates [Overseer]: yeah, I read them all at work too. one of these days I'm actually going to have to accomplish something there [Volt9]: lol...I try to avoid that [Overseer]: I always tell myself I will get a lot of work done, but then I end up reading usenet and the time flies by [Volt9]: yeah, forums are the killer for me...between gg and ttlg.com and something awful its a rare day I get something constructive done [Overseer]: I don't like web forums as a rule. too many morons out there and too much wasted space. forums are really killing the gaming newsgroups, too, because a lot of game specific discussion goes there instead of the newsgroups. [Overseer]: GG is an exception, though. A lot of smart and mature people there [Volt9]: oh I remember something I was going to ask about my character...do you think repair is a worthile choice for a skill? I thinking maybe outdoorsman or science might me more practical. [Overseer]: repair will be a very useful skill [Overseer]: I mean, I'm not saying you have to take it, but if you do it will get you at least as much benefit as science or outdoorsman [Volt9]: gg is just strange, frankly. It totally flies in the face of convention as far as online behavior is concerned. [Volt9]: ok, I'll think on it some more [Overseer]: you don't have to tag it, of cours.e you can always just spend points on it [Volt9]: true [Overseer]: I think you get 21 points per level [Volt9]: yeah, one of the reasons I didn't choose gifted...want those skill points [Volt9]: by second level I should actually be a decent shot [Overseer]: yeah [Overseer]: well, you didn't do too badly this time [Overseer]: very people are going to have 100% or even close marksmanship. You're already above average [Volt9]: heh, now if those wolves were packing heat... [Volt9]: well, first level I'll probably get guns up into the low 90's then leave it...concentrate on my other skills [Overseer]: well, that could work, too [Overseer]: of course, you'll need to see what's going on. You may want to put some points into something else because you need it in the campaign [Volt9]: I think my character will have a bizarre fixation with targeted groin shots [Overseer]: heh [Overseer]: that could be fun [Volt9]: true...it also depends on the skills the other players have..I may need to pick up something so we're not completely lacking in an area [Overseer]: well, I already have potentially four people who haven't sent me characters, so there's still a lot of leeway [Volt9]: beef genie hasn't created a char yet? [Overseer]: nope [Volt9]: hmm... [Overseer]: he seemed enthusiastic enough [Overseer]: I have been saying there's no time pressure, though [Volt9]: so we're pretty much decided on sunday then? [Overseer]: I'm going to try to get all the characters in by Friday so I can prepare [Overseer]: yeah, that looks like its the only time everyone can make it [Volt9]: great. works for me [Overseer]: my gf is a little POed that I will be role playing both sat and sun afternoons, but at least doing fallout every two weeks will help that a little. [Volt9]: lol...that's a lot of rpg...plus the time you play computer games :) [Overseer]: gah... I'm sleepy. I didn't get to sleep untila fter 4am last night. Stayed up late playing Shadow Watch [Overseer]: yeah... it does seem like a lot. I guess I will have to act extra affectionate to make up for it [Volt9]: hey how is that? I was looking for it in a store the other day, but it was still $35 [Overseer]: I love it [Volt9]: I just got heretic II and jedi knight [Overseer]: I know EB was selling it for $20 recently. [Volt9]: I know you're a huge jagged alliance junkie like me...does it measure up? [Overseer]: you can probably get it from dragon.ca for just shipping right now, too. they are havnig a rebate deal [Overseer]: well, the thing to remember about SW is that it isn't at all like Jagged Alliance or X-Com. [Volt9]: I'll look for it in earnest now...dying for a good turn based strat game [Volt9]: really? [Overseer]: its a totally different design of game. Rather than going for extreme realism, it goes for tactical elegance. A lot of people don't like it because it isn't like JA because you can't pick up guns and only one guys uses grenades. Its really a lot more like tactical chess than most squad games [Volt9]: hmm [Volt9]: but you like it despite the differences [Overseer]: It also has a somewhat steep learning curve. When you start playing it its not so fun because it seems very hard. You need to unlearn a lot of tactics from JA and other games to really survive in SW. The combat is a lot more lethal so you can't run into a room guns blasing. [Volt9]: I heard the campaign was short, but there's a random mission generator? [Overseer]: I think its great. Its much more rewarding to me than JA or X-Com, because I feel like I've accomplished something when I figure out the right tactics for a misson. In those other games, you can basiclly play all the missions about the same. [Overseer]: Well, the campaign consists of three cities, and each city contains five or six missions [Overseer]: however, each city has three seperate plot lines, and each time you play the campaign you get a different plotline for each city. Plus, the order can change [Volt9]: is there an editor? [Overseer]: so if you go to Rio first in one game it will be totally different if you go there last because your agent's skills will be different. [Overseer]: There's no editor, unfortunately. [Overseer]: I've played through the campaign 4 times now and am on the 3rd city of my fifth. I would have done more but I'm playing on Hard mode which really is hard [Volt9]: too bad. JA 2 would have been so cool with an editor...it's a shame [Overseer]: that's why I like JADG [Overseer]: I make lots of missions for that game. [Volt9]: I still play that occasionally [Overseer]: Ever watch the TV show The Prisoner? [Volt9]: yep, years ago [Overseer]: I made a JADG campaign based on that. Its a lot of fun [Volt9]: heh. thats an interesting concept [Overseer]: I also made a scifi time travelling one, and I've been collaborating on a WWII one with some other guys on my JADG list. [Volt9]: so there's still a community for it? [Overseer]: not a whole lot, but there are some still out there. I can at least get the satisfaction of playing my own missions. [Volt9]: I just want unfinished business. It's diving me nuts that it's finished and I can't get my sweaty little palms on it [Overseer]: yeah... I liked JA2 a lot initally, but I've never felt like I wanted to play it again since I uninstalled it. I don't think its as much of a classic as JA1 and DG. Those are games I can always play over. [Volt9]: sales in america must have been abyssmal...but it did great in Europe [Overseer]: yeah, the europeans love tactical games whereas us is more twitch oriented [Volt9]: I love the whole series. They took the concept of x-com and added so much character to it [Overseer]: JA2 is definitely a good game. I even wrote a FAQ on it, although I never update it. I just don't feel like playing it again... [Overseer]: well, I think I'm going to get going [Overseer]: I doubt anyone else is going to show up [Volt9]: well, I'm going to take off, I need to go run some errands this afternoon. This was fun though, and I think the game will be enjoyable [Volt9]: heh [Overseer]: okay. I'll see ya [Volt9]: so let me know what's up via email, okay? [Overseer]: ok [Volt9]: take care
